The fine Great War double gallantry medal group of 4 awarded to Sergeant William Henry Hannaford, 19th (2nd Public Works Pioneers) Battalion, Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex) Regiment.
Military Medal: London Gazette (Supplement): 21 April, 1921 (award to be dated 20 August 1919).
Distinguished Conduct Medal: London Gazette (Supplement): 3 September 1919 pp 11124:
P.W. / 3263 L. Sjt. W. H. Hannaford, 19th Bn. Middx. R. (Elstree)
‘for gallantry and devotion to duty whilst in change of a working party on the Reninghelst Switch Road on the 27th July, 1918. He collected some men together to take rations and transport up the line, and although the enemy repeatedly put down bursts of shell fire on or around the road he remained on his work and completed it. He has more than once undertaken important work, and has invariably carried it out, often under trying conditions. He has set a splendid example.’
