15274 Private SIDNEY COOPER, 1st Bn. Suffolk Regiment died 04 October 1916 aged 21 years old.
He is Remembered with Honour at Struma Military Cemetery, Greece. He is one of 12 Suffolk Regiment killed in Salonika on this day who rests in this Cemetery.
Prior to posting to Salonika Cooper had entered France 26th January 1915 and he was initially wounded on the July 1915 by gun shot to the shoulder being admitted to No 3 Casualty Clearing Station 2nd July 1915. On recovery he stayed with his battalion and was posted to Salonika.
From Christmas 1915 until mid 1916, 1st Suffolk were almost constantly in the front line in the hills above Salonika in an area of the front line given the nickname of “The Birdcage.” The Birdcage was a defensive line across the open ground about 20 miles north of the Greek city of Salonika.
Son of H. W. J. and Emma Elizabeth Cooper, of Red House, Wherstead, Ipswich. Native of Wenhaston, Halesworth, Suffolk.
