45th Company Machine Gun Corps double gallantry medal group to Hume Smith Lafferty.
Awarded to Sgt. H. Lafferty – the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Military Medal, Medals – both officially impressed to ” 3245 SJT. H. LAFFERTY. 45/Coy M.G.C“, the 1914-1915 Star, officially impressed with “5443 Pte. H. LAFFERTY. GORD. HIGHRS.”, the Victory and War Medals, both officially impressed with “5443 SJT. H. LAFFERTY. GORDONS.“, the Canada Volunteer Service Medal, unnamed; the 1939-1945 War Medal (unnamed, silver Canadian issue). All 7 medals and awards have been lacquer plated in the customary Canadian style.
Lafferty entered France 9th July 1915 as 5443 Private, 10th Bn Gordon Highlanders prior to joining the Machine Gun Corps (3245 Sgt).

D.C.M. award – London Gazette 19th November 1917, pp 11956. To – 3245 Sjt. H. Lafferty, M.G. Corps (Swindon).
DCM citation published London Gazette February 8th 1918 Issue reads as follows: “Sjt. H. Lafferty, M.G. Corps (Swindon) – For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in charge of two guns and teams that went forward with one of the attacking companies. The attack was held up by heavy machine gun fire and all officers became casualties. He kept his gun in action in spite of heavy shelling at times and kept down all attempted counter attacks. When relieved after forty-eight hours he nevertheless remained up for five days and nights in mud and rain.”
Lafferty was born 10th June 1893 in Dumbarton, Scotland. He married 1921 in Wiltshire. His brother Owen Smith Lafferty was killed on the 23rd April 1917, Arras. In 1925 Lafferty and his new wife emigrated to Canada, arriving in Quebec. He was employed, in Canada, as a messenger with the Bank of Nova Scotia, Kitchener, Ontario.
He died 9th October 1973 at the Pinehaven Nursing Home, in Kitchener, Ontario, Quebec and he is buried in Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener, Ontario.
