First Battle of the Aisne casualty medal group to a 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusilier.
Private TRACEY LANE, Service Number: 908, 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, was Killed in Action 14 September 1914 aged 33 years. Husband of Charlotte Lane, of 55, Crookston Rd., Well Hall, Eltham. He entered France 13th August 1914
He is Remembered with Honour at LA FERTE-SOUS-JOUARRE MEMORIAL, France. Private Lane rests with 24 other ranks of the Northumberland Fusiliers who were killed on this day of 14th September 1914, The First Battle of the Aisne.
This superb early casualty lot consists – Memorial plaque (TRACEY LANE), 1914 Star and clasp named to 908 PTE. T. LANE. 1 / NORTH’D FUS. with paper envelope and waxed box for the Memorial Plaque, Small ribbon piece with rosette. The original clasp is loose. Accompanied by a photograph postcard and the embossed booklet of his “Small Book”. It is embossed to No. 908 T. LANE. B. COY. 1st 5th Fusiliers. A good copy of the Memorial Roll is also included.
The Small Book confirms that Tracey Lane enlisted at Woolwich 24th February 1905 at the age of 18 years for 9 years and 3 months. He was born in Woolwich and was a labourer by profession. His parental family and siblings lived at 55 Nightingale Road, Woolwich. Prior to the Great War he was stationed briefly in both South Africa and India and in 1905 he passed instruction in the mounted Infantry.
