Description

The career campaign group of medal to Charles Lewis Smith, born Plumstead, Kent 11th February 1892 who was killed in 1917 aged 25 years.

 He was a 16 year old Telegraph Messenger when he joined the Royal Navy as a Boy (Service number J. 843). Service sheet confirms he joined H.M.S. Hyacinth in March 1909 (AGS Medal), later sering on H.M.S. Swiftsure from March 1913 (NGS medal) into the Great War.

Charles Lewis Smith was later killed whilst serving on H.M.S. Nimrod on the 9th December 1917. His service record states “accidentally killed through being jammed between the shackle pin of the moorings and the buoy when ship was securing to buoys…”

He is Remembered with Honour at Shotley (St. Mary) Churchyard, near Ipswich, Suffolk.
