Description

Anglo Boer War Queen’s South Africa medal with 3 clasps to the 12th Lancers.

Medal – QSA with Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal clasps named to 4818 PTE. E. M. RAYMOND. 12TH LANCERS.

Medal rolls confirm these 3 clasps and a later addition of the South Africa 01 and 02 clasps thus making it a 5 clasp QSA. A Great War 1914 star medal trio and plaque will also have been issued to Edwin George Mungeham which if re-united would make a very unusual and interesting medal group.

He originally attested into the Lancers as Mark Edwin Raimond. He was born in Faversham, Kent and stated that he was an 18 year old porter at the time of attestation in 1899. .  He transferred from the Lancers to the Army Veterinary Corps prior to his service in the Cheshire Regiment. His service numbers were 4818 Lancers to 900 AVC then re-engaging as 51644 Cheshire Regiment with whom he was serving when killed in the Great War.

51644 Private Edwin George Mungeham 15th Bn Cheshire Regiment died 14th October 1918 and is Remembered with Honour on the Tyne Cot Memorial. His CWGC Certificate confirms – Son of Mrs. S. A. Mungeham; husband of Sarah Ann Mungeham, of 37, Knowles Hill Crescent, Lewisham, London.

To emphasise the confusion with her husband’s service she wrote in 1919 explaining that her husband had served as Raimond in Africa then later as Mungehan.
