Description
The Boxer Rebellion Long Service Group of Edward Henry Turner who was born in Caister, Norfolk, 1880.
He joined the Royal Navy as Boy Cl.II in September 1897. He was serving on H.M.S. Dido and is on the Dido medal roll for his China Medal which was issued to him on HMS Wildfire.
In 1910 he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve ( B7049) until the outbreak of war.
Notably he joined the crew of HMS Phoenix (parent ship H.M.S. Blenheim) on 1st August 1917. H.M.S. Phoenix was sunk whilst patrolling the Otranto Barrage after being torpedoed by the Austro-Hungarian submarine SM U-27 on 14th May 1918. HMS Phoenix was a destroyer of the Acheron class of 765 tons and was the only British warship to be sunk by the Austrian Navy.
