The Cold War and Search and Rescue log book, Goldfish Club Membership Badge of 4230293 Flt. Lt. M. T. Payne.
Flying Log Book from August 1966 to January 1970 in a career as a Navigator with 2 years on Vulcans with 101 Squadron followed by as posting as a Navigator with 22 Squadron, Whirlwind Search and Rescue 1971 to 1973.

During this posting with 22 Squadron S.A.R. he was on the crew of XP426 answering a “scramble” to attend a Casevac from Lundy Island which ditched – thus qualifying for the Goldfish Club membership Card and Badge selling here.

This superb Log Book and Goldfish Badge lot also contains 11 large monochrome photographs on card, believed to have been framed in display, featuring 7 of SAR Whirlwind XP 426 on exercise with Appledore Life Boat off the Torridge Estuary,that ditched (see above), 3 of 204 Squadron Shackletons (M, N, O), 2 Flying Suits named to Payne, a small bundle of metal and plastic measuring cards and 2 blazer badges of 101 Squadron and 22 Squadron.
The Log Book starts with a note that his log Book # 1 was destroyed in a Barrack Room flood at RAF Marham 4th July 1966. The Log Book ends with a humerous hand, pencil drawn sketch of the ditching of XJ426, 22.8.1971. To the rear of the book is his listing of postings from May 1958 to the beginning of his posting to Chivenor.
The first section of the Log Book entries covers his Cold War posting with Vulcans at 101 Squadron. The many entries cover regular Exercises such as Goose Bay, Goose Ranger, Omaha, Kinsman, Billion, Mickey Finn, practice Scrambles, practice bombing, flights to Luqa and Laarbruch.

Posted to 22 Squadron January 1971 at Chivenor, North Devon, he spent 6 months training and testing. His first Scramble was 6th July 1971 searching for a swimmer swept out to sea at Croyde. The Log Book contains circa 30 Scramble Search and Rescues including the aborted rescue when they ditched in XF426. The most frequent of rescues were of members of the public in difficulty, for which there are several newspaper reports, however he also records rescues from Royal Navy ships and a Submarine and precautionary scrambles for RNAS Hunters.
