Great War Cameron Highlanders Casualty Gallantry medal group
The complete Great War gallantry medal and Plaque group to the very young Cameron Highlander, Alexander Sime, one of 3 brothers killed in the Great War.
Alexander Sime enlisted 13th February 1914 into the Cameron Highlanders at Glasgow. He would have been just over 17 years when he enlisted. The young recruit joined “B” Company, 1st Bn. Camerons 18th February 1914 at Edinburgh Castle.
WOUNDED
He landed in France 14th August 1914 and took part in the Battle of The Aisne September 1914. He was wounded in the left forearm as reported in the 79th News 23rd Sept 1914. His wound would probably have occurred around Vendresse, Mons – he was still not 18 years of age.
MILITARY MEDAL
He was awarded the Military Medal for his action in the Battle of Bethune, Gazetted 6th August 1918 pp 9250.
The action for this Gallantry award was at what was to be named the Battle of Bethune following the capture of a German prisoner on the 17th April 1918 near Givenchy. Information was given that the Germans were about to launch an attack. This attack began in the early hours of 17th April. It was during this battle that Sime was awarded his gallantry medal.
DIED OF WOUNDS
Quoting from The Highland Times 26th September 1918
Only a few weeks ago we reported with pleasure the award of the Military Medal for bravery in the field to Lance-Corporal Alexander Sime, Cameron Highlanders. With regret we have today to chronicle his death in action on 4th September.
Hi C/O writes – “On the 2nd September, Alex, was severely wounded by shell-fire during the advance. I had him attended to and sent down to the CC Station. I heard this morning that he had succumbed to his wounds at a base hospital…..”

Alexander Sime was born on 21st December 1896 , at 10 Love Loan, Barony, Glasgow. His father was Alexaner Sime, Master Tiler and Mary Sime (nee McBrierty). During the course of the war he had returned home to marry Catherine Young of Kessock Stret, Inverness.
Alexander Sime was one of 3 brothers to be killed in the Great War.
