Royal Humane Society Medal 1856.

Awarded to John Curl for rescuing 13 year old girl Frances Sutcliffe from Top Lock, Blackfriars Canal, Rochdale, Lancashire 14th July 1856.

The Committee Meeting of 17th September 1856 discussed Case Number 15876.

On the 14th July 1856, Francis Sutcliffe (13) of Crawford Street, Rochdale accidentally fell into the water at  Top Lock, Blackfriars Canal, Rochdale, Lancashire. The claimant, John Curl, a 27 year old joiner of South Terrace, Aldham Road, Rochdale, jumped in to her assistance, dived and rescued her. She was “insensible” but resuscitated and it was a successful case. The “medical” man was Mr. R . Ogden, a Surgeon in Rochdale. Witnessed by Mr I. Simpson, Mr Robert Lee, Sarah Curl and others.
