Description
Great War South Downs German Spring Offensive Officer casualty 1914-1915 Star trio awarded to Private A.H.E. Gunner, Sussex Yeomanry who after being commissioned served as a Second Lieutenant with 11th (1st South Downs) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Initially serving at Gallipoli from 7th October 1915, after being commissioned he would arrive with 11th (1st South Downs) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment on 13th January 1918 and was killed in action during the fighting at Rozieres on 26th March 1918 during the opening days of the German Spring Offensive, he is buried at Delville Wood Cemetery, Longueval.

Arthur Henry Edmund Gunner was born on 1st June 1889 at Tunbridge Wells. In April 1908 he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank and Gunner became an employee of the amalgamated London County & Westminster Bank. Giving his trade as a Bank Manager he joined the Sussex Yeomanry on 25th January 1915 and serving initially as a Private (No. 2402) at Gallipoli from 7th October 1915. He would later transfer to the Royal Sussex Regiment where he served as a Private (No. 320307) before receiving a commission on 31st October 1917.
He joined 11th (1st South Downs) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment on 13th January 1918 and would be killed in action on 26th March 1918 during the Battle of Rozieres which took place shortly after the beginning of the German Spring Offensive. He is buried in Delville Wood Cemetery as well as being remembered on the Arundel War Memorial. He was the son of Mr and Mrs. William Henry Gunner of Bank House, Arundel and the husband of Mrs. Emily May Gunner of Meadowcroft, Arundel.
