The Anglo Boer War medal pair of Corporal Herbert Joseph Watson, 2nd Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment.

Medals – Queen’s South Africa medal with Cape Colony, Transvaal and Wittebergen clasps to 4552 CPL. H. J. WATSON. 2ND WILTS REGT and King’s South Africa meal with South Africa 1901 and 1902 clasps named to 4552 PTE. H. J. WATSON. WILTS REGT.

Medals and clasps are confirmed on medal rolls. The QSA medal roll confirms that he transferred to the Military Foot Police (no. 702) on the 28th February 1903.

 

His service papers confirm his service record from Home service 1896 to 1899, South Africa 16th December 1899 to 1st January 1903, Home service again from January 1903 to September 1914 when he joined the Expeditionary Force entering France from 8th December 1914 to 11th November 1919 with the Military Foot Police. His papers also summarise his medals awarded as the Medaille D’Honneur avec Glaives (en Argent), QSA and KSA and Long Service Medal with Great War 1914/15 Star trio.

Herbert Joseph Watson was a 24 year old clerk, born Portsmouth Hampshire, when he attested into the Wiltshire Regiment on the 22nd September 1899 at London. His Dispersal Unit ID home address is given as 56 Markenfield Road, Guildford, Surrey on 12th December 1919.

 

His Great War Service confirms that he was awarded the 1914/15 Star medal trio to him serving as 702 Serjeant Military Foot Police with this date of entry to France 8th December 1914. He was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct medal as announced in Army Order April 1915 to 702 Serjeant H J Watson, Military Foot Police. Award of the Medaille D’Honneur avec Glaives (en Argent) announced in the London Gazette 15th December 1919 page 15585.
